When printing a business card, distinguish the final trim size from the document supplied to the printer with bleed. Several commercial dimensions are used in Spain, and there is no single compulsory format for every company.
Adapt the content and layout to the finished size in which the card will be read and printed.
Common business card size
A common size in Spain is 85 × 55 mm. Formats such as 90 × 50 mm and custom dimensions are also used. Confirm the printer’s chosen specification before preparing the design.
Business card and print-file size table
These are indicative dimensions found in the Spanish market. The printer must confirm the trim size and bleed before production.
| Finished size | File with 3 mm bleed on every side | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| 85 × 55 mm | 91 × 61 mm | Common format in Spain |
| 90 × 50 mm | 96 × 56 mm | Longer landscape alternative |
| 85 × 54 mm | 91 × 60 mm | Close to bank-card dimensions; confirm the finish |
Bleed does not increase the finished card size. It is an additional area removed during trimming. Keep text and logos away from the cut line within a safe margin whose exact size depends on the production template.
Business card dimensions in centimetres and pixels
A standard 85 × 55 mm card measures 8.5 × 5.5 cm. At 300 dpi, a raster image at the finished size is approximately 1,004 × 650 pixels. With 3 mm bleed on every side, the complete 91 × 61 mm document is approximately 1,075 × 720 pixels at that resolution. Keep logos as vectors whenever possible.
Bleed and the safe margin are different areas. On an 85 × 55 mm card with a 3 mm internal safe margin, the approximate space for important details is 79 × 49 mm. Confirm the exact value with the printer’s template, particularly with rounded corners or die cutting.
Before submitting the design
Test QR codes at actual size, review the smallest type and avoid a very thin border close to the trim edge: even a small cutting tolerance can make it look uneven.
Landscape, portrait and square cards
Changing orientation does not alter the surface area, but it changes the text arrangement. A portrait card can suit narrow compositions; a square card should be checked for storage convenience.
How to calculate bleed
If the printer requests 3 mm on every side, an 85 × 55 mm card requires a 91 × 61 mm file. The finished size remains 85 × 55 mm.
Rounded corners and die cutting
Corner radii reduce the usable area and must be respected in the template. For custom shapes, confirm that the card remains easy to store and that details are not too close to the cut.
Paper and weight
Rigidity depends on the paper and its construction, not only its grams per square metre. Coated and textured surfaces provide different finishes; physical samples may be useful.
How to prepare the files
- Confirm the finished dimensions.
- Check the name, phone number and address.
- Review typography and QR codes at actual size.
- Use the original logo artwork.
- Respect the bleed and safe margin.
- Validate the exported PDF.
