What Is an Epilogue in a Book? Meaning and Examples

Impresión en Madrid todo sobre el epilogo de un libro

An epilogue appears after the main body of a work and may show what happened later to the characters, complete an idea or close a reflection. Not every book needs one. Its value depends on what the reader still needs to know after the ending.

In brief: an epilogue is a section following the main text that may show consequences, a future scene or a final reflection. It does not replace the resolution and is not compulsory.

What is an epilogue?

It is a section at the end of a work that provides additional information or perspective. In fiction, it may take place some time after the main events; in non-fiction, it may add a later reflection.

Epilogue, prologue and resolution

A prologue appears before the main text. The resolution belongs to the narrative itself and resolves the central conflict; an epilogue can add a later perspective. These functions should not be confused.

When does an epilogue add value?

Imagine a novel whose conflict ends when the protagonist returns home. If the author wants to show, five years later, how the relationship with the family has changed, that later scene may work as an epilogue. It should not be used to resolve the main conflict at the last moment; that belongs in the resolution.

In a memoir, an epilogue can explain what happened after the period covered. In an essay, it can present a final reflection that the author wishes to distinguish from the earlier chapters. In both cases, it should add a new perspective rather than repeat the book’s summary.

When should you use one?

It may be useful for showing the consequences of events, clarifying a development over time or closing a subject without adding another full chapter. If the ending already works, additional pages may be unnecessary.

How to write an epilogue

  1. Decide what the reader still needs to know.
  2. Maintain a clear connection with the rest of the book.
  3. Avoid introducing a new plot without enough space to develop it.
  4. Keep its length proportionate.
  5. Check that it does not contradict the story.

An original short epilogue example

Ten years later, the bookshop still stood on the same corner. The shelves had changed, but a folded note remained inside the first book they had sold together.

This example shows a later scene without retelling the entire resolution.

How is an epilogue laid out in a printed book?

It may begin on a new page and use the same typographic system as the chapters, with its own heading. Check the contents page, end matter and pagination as part of the editorial layout.
