Perfect Binding: Process, Adhesives and Advantages

Impresión en Madrid encuadernacion fresada caracteristicas y ventajas

Perfect binding is a paperback binding method in which the spine edge of the page block is prepared so that the leaves can be joined with adhesive.

How is the spine prepared?

The edge of the block is milled or roughened to help the adhesive bond with the pages. The result depends on the materials, equipment and construction of the publication.

Perfect binding is one of several paperback structures. It should be compared with sewn binding and other options according to the finished product’s requirements.

Common adhesives

EVA and PUR systems have different application and performance characteristics. No adhesive is automatically the best choice for every paper or binding specification.

Perfect binding or sewn binding?

Sewn binding joins folded sections with thread. In perfect binding, the main connection is made with adhesive on the prepared spine. The choice depends on the format, page count, paper and intended use.

Advantages and limitations

The process produces paperback publications with a printable spine. Opening behaviour and durability depend on the paper, adhesive and complete structure.

Preparing the cover

The actual thickness of the page block must be known. Spine width cannot be calculated from paper weight alone; the paper’s thickness, page count and binding allowances also matter.

Checking the artwork

  1. Confirm the finished size and page count.
  2. Allow sufficient inner margins.
  3. Check images and fonts.
  4. Prepare the bleed and extended cover artwork.
  5. Approve a physical sample.

Frequently asked questions
