How to Fix Widows and Orphans in Word and InDesign

Impresión en Madrid que son las lineas viudas y huerfanas

Widows and orphans occur when a line from a paragraph is left isolated at the beginning or end of a page or column. They can be corrected without filling the document with manual line breaks. The right method depends on the application and composition style.

Terminology can vary between style guides, but the practical objective is the same: avoid a single line being visually separated from the rest of its paragraph. This guide focuses on correcting the problem during layout.

How to fix widows and orphans in Microsoft Word

  1. Select the affected paragraph or modify the style applied to every paragraph of that type.
  2. Open the Paragraph options and select the line and page breaks tab. Its exact name may vary by version.
  3. Enable Widow/Orphan control. Word will try to prevent a single isolated line.
  4. Review the result with formatting marks visible and check that the change has not left a large empty space on the previous page.

For a book or report containing many paragraphs, apply the control through styles. This avoids repairing every case separately and keeps the document consistent.

Which options should you check in Adobe InDesign?

In InDesign, use the paragraph panel’s or paragraph style’s Keep Options. You can specify how many lines must remain together at the beginning or end of a paragraph and prevent a heading from separating from the text it introduces.

  1. Open the paragraph style used for the text.
  2. Review Keep Lines Together and Keep with Next.
  3. Set a rule appropriate to the grid, number of columns and normal paragraph length.
  4. Recompose the document and check the breaks that have moved to subsequent pages.

An automatic correction can solve one case and displace another two pages later. In a long publication, review the entire document before export.

What if automatic control is not enough?

First check for a manual page break, a text frame with insufficient space or a style with overly restrictive settings. Then consider small editorial changes: carefully adjust a paragraph, review hyphenation, reposition an image or alter the text area within the design specifications.

Do not solve the problem by adding arbitrary spaces or paragraph returns. They can disrupt the text when a word is corrected or the page size changes.

Isolated headings also need attention

A heading at the bottom of a page without the paragraph it introduces is another composition problem. Keep the heading with the following text and check the style hierarchy. In magazines and catalogues, the grid and image positions matter as much as typography.

Final check before delivering the PDF

  • Inspect every page at its actual reading size.
  • Check the beginnings and ends of columns as well as page breaks.
  • Review headings, subheadings, quotations and image captions.
  • Make sure the changes have not created unexpected gaps.
  • Export using the agreed print settings and inspect the PDF again.

Once the layout has been checked, confirm its page size, margins, bleed and binding requirements with the printer.
