What Is a Book ISBN? Structure, Formats and Lookup

Impresión en Madrid que es el isbn de un libro

ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number and identifies specific editions of monographic publications. It supports book cataloguing, distribution and sales, but does not prove authorship or the quality of a work. In Spain, an ISBN is not compulsory in order to publish a book.

An ISBN identifies a particular edition and format, not necessarily every version of the same work. A printed book and its digital edition may need different identifiers.

What does ISBN mean?

It is an internationally standardised number associated with a bibliographic edition. It helps bookshops, distributors and cataloguing systems distinguish between publishing products.

How is ISBN-13 structured?

The current format contains thirteen digits and may use hyphens to show the prefix, registration group, registrant, publication and check digit. The precise grouping depends on the ranges assigned.

ISBN-10 versus ISBN-13

Ten-digit ISBNs belong to the previous system; ISBN-13 has been used for new assignments since 2007. Conversion is not simply a matter of adding three digits without recalculating the check digit.

When does the ISBN change?

Different formats, such as separately marketed print and digital editions, may require distinct identifiers. A new edition containing significant changes may need a new one under the agency’s rules.

ISBN, legal deposit and rights

Identifier or procedure Purpose
ISBN Commercial identification of an edition
Legal deposit Preservation of published heritage
Intellectual property registration Registration of rights under applicable law

Where can you find a book’s ISBN?

It usually appears on the copyright page and often on the back cover beside a barcode. It may also be found in publishing databases and catalogues.

How can you check whether it is valid?

The ISBN-13 check digit is calculated using an algorithm with alternating weights. Passing this mathematical check does not guarantee that the associated publishing data is correct.

What must the publisher give the printer?

The publisher should provide the assigned identifier, the information for the copyright page and, where appropriate, the edition’s barcode. The printer should not invent an ISBN.

If you need an identifier for a publication in Spain, check the current application requirements and fees with the Spanish ISBN Agency before finalising the edition.
