A shop window may need advertising without completely blocking the view outside. Perforated window vinyl has tiny holes that allow some light through and provide a degree of visibility through the material.
The effect is not automatic and does not work in exactly the same way by day and night: it depends on the lighting and on which side of the glass is being viewed.
In brief: perforated vinyl combines a printable surface with small openings. Visibility from inside depends on the lighting, the film and the application side.
How perforated window vinyl works
The design is printed on perforated film. Some products have a light printable face and a dark reverse. When it is brighter outside than inside, the printed image can stand out from the street while retaining some outward visibility from the interior.
When the lighting is reversed, the effect changes too. It should therefore not be sold as a guaranteed 24-hour privacy system.
Perforated, opaque or transparent vinyl
| Material | When to consider it | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Perforated | Printed graphics with some visibility through them | Visibility varies with lighting |
| Opaque | Covering the background of a window | Reduces light and visibility |
| Transparent | Keeping parts of the glass visible | The background affects colour reproduction |
Uses on shop windows and glazing
It can be used for retail campaigns, glazed façades and other commercial spaces. Not every type of glass, adhesive or installation system is compatible, so check the surface and removal requirements first.
What about vehicle windows?
Whether film is permitted on vehicle glazing depends on local regulations and the installation. A vinyl that adheres to glass is not necessarily approved for every vehicle window.
Important: for vehicle use, confirm approval and visibility requirements before ordering the print.
How to prepare artwork for perforated vinyl
- Measure the surface and confirm the application side.
- Check whether the design must be reversed to read correctly from outside.
- Use sufficiently large lettering, as the perforations interrupt the printed surface.
- Avoid very small details and low-contrast combinations.
- Confirm the material, laminate, resolution and cutting requirements with production.
- Test the design from both sides and under different lighting.
Other vinyl options for windows
Different campaigns may require opaque, transparent, frosted or perforated films. Our large format printing service can help assess the substrate, artwork and intended location.
Frequently asked questions
Can you see through it from inside?
Under certain conditions, yes, although this depends on the product and the lighting.
Does it work the same way at night?
Not necessarily, because the balance of light between the two sides changes.
Is it the same as privacy film?
No. It should not be regarded as a permanent guarantee of privacy.
