Custom Roll Labels: Materials and Ordering Specifications

Roll labels are widely used for food products, cosmetics, Packaging and logistics. Their main difference from sheet labels is not only the delivery format: when a machine applies them, unwind direction, spacing and roll dimensions all matter.

Before ordering custom adhesive roll labels, check how they will be applied and to which surface. A label that adheres well to a dry box will not necessarily perform the same way on a refrigerated or curved container.

To order roll labels, specify the size, shape, quantity, face material, adhesive, application method, unwind direction and internal core diameter.

Roll labels versus sheet labels

A roll carries labels on a continuous wound liner. It can make repeated manual labelling easier and feed automatic applicators. Sheet labels may suit small quantities or occasional manual application better.

The right option depends on the quantity and packaging-line workflow, not on appearance alone.

Face materials and adhesives to compare

Adhesive paper

It may suit dry packaging and indoor applications. Performance against moisture and abrasion depends on the exact product and finish.

Synthetic films

Materials such as polypropylene are used where labels need properties different from paper. Match the choice to the container and real conditions.

Permanent or removable adhesive

Adhesives are not interchangeable. Check the surface, application temperature and intended use, especially for chilled products.

Unwind direction, core and label gap

For automatic application, confirm the label orientation, leading edge, internal core diameter, maximum external roll diameter and gap between labels with the applicator manufacturer or integrator.

Supplying only the label dimensions can result in a correctly printed roll that will not run on the machine.

Finishes and print requirements

A finish can protect the graphic or change its appearance. Before selecting a laminate or varnish, check compatibility with the face material and package use. Test every barcode at final size on the finished label.

Ordering mistakes to avoid

  1. Selecting an adhesive without knowing the container surface.
  2. Omitting the unwind direction for machine application.
  3. Placing legal information or codes too close to the die line.
  4. Assuming every material tolerates moisture or cold.
  5. Failing to test a sample on the actual container.

Frequently asked questions

Can round labels be supplied on rolls?

Yes, provided the die-cutting and application process are compatible.

What information does the printer need?

Dimensions, material, quantity, adhesive, intended use, artwork and roll specifications for machine application.

Are all roll labels suitable for food products?

No. Materials and conditions must be checked against the container, use and applicable requirements.
