Custom Presentation Folders with Pockets

A corporate folder can look impeccable yet fail if documents protrude or the pocket is too shallow. Before printing custom pocket folders, define what they will hold and how they will be presented.

Pocket folders are used for quotations, contracts, presentations and sales documents. Unlike ring binders, they hold unpunched sheets, but their capacity is limited.

First decide: document format, number of sheets and whether one or two pockets are required. Then select the die line, paper, finishes and design.

What is a pocket folder?

It is a folded cover with one or more internal pockets. Some structures include business-card slots or a gusset for additional capacity. The cutting and folding pattern determines how the pieces fit.

A4 folders: dimensions and capacity

A folder intended for A4 documents should not measure exactly 210 × 297 mm. It needs clearance so sheets fit without bending. A thick dossier requires a suitably sized pocket and possibly a gusset.

Distinguish the open size, closed size and usable internal size. Always request the die line before designing.

Single pocket, double pocket and gusseted folders

Model When to consider it What to check
Single pocket Light dossiers and quotations Pocket height
Double pocket Presentations with different documents Closure and overlaps
Gusseted More content or varied materials Capacity and overall rigidity

Paper, lamination and finishes

Board with enough rigidity helps retain the shape, although grammage alone does not determine strength. Lamination can change the feel and protect the print; thick stock and pronounced folds may require creasing.

The brand identity should remain recognisable when the folder is open or closed. Keep important text away from fold lines and areas covered by pockets.

How to prepare the artwork

  1. Confirm dimensions and pocket type.
  2. Request the exact die-line template.
  3. Separate cut, crease and print areas.
  4. Prepare bleed and safe margins to the printer’s specification.
  5. Make a folded proof to check the order and orientation of every panel.

Common mistakes

  • Designing on a generic A4 canvas without clearance.
  • Ignoring the actual dossier thickness.
  • Placing a logo where the pocket covers it.
  • Choosing board that does not fold correctly.
  • Mixing die lines into the final artwork.

Compare pocket structures, gussets and pocketless folders according to the volume and presentation required.

Frequently asked questions

Is an A4 folder exactly the same size as the paper?

No. Its internal dimensions must be larger to hold the document comfortably.

Can business-card slots be included?

Yes, when they are incorporated into the die line.

Which material should I choose?

That depends on document quantity, use and desired finish.
