A shop-window promotion, a wayfinding message and a display graphic can all be printed on vinyl, but they do not require the same material. When ordering custom printed vinyl, begin with the installation location rather than selecting an attractive finish from a screen.
This guide covers order preparation and substrate selection. Adhesion and installation should also be assessed against the actual surface and environmental conditions.
What information does a printer need?
State the final dimensions, quantity, location, application surface and expected service life. Also specify whether a window graphic will be viewed from one side or both and whether it needs contour cutting.
Without this information, two quotations for “printed vinyl” may describe technically different products.
Monomeric, polymeric and other vinyl films
Films vary in composition, dimensional stability, adhesive and intended application. Monomeric ranges are commonly used on flat surfaces and for temporary work; certain polymeric films suit more demanding uses. Complex curves may require specialist cast or conformable films.
Always confirm the manufacturer’s application limits and expected life for the exact product.
Vinyl for windows, walls and panels
| Destination | Options to assess | Precaution |
|---|---|---|
| Shop window | Opaque, transparent or special-effect film | Reading direction and application side |
| Smooth wall | Film compatible with the coating | Paint compatibility |
| Commercial panel | Adhesive and laminate suited to use | Surface preparation |
| Outdoor location | Range designed for the exposure | Sun, rain and expected life |
How to prepare the print artwork
- Define the final size and installation direction.
- Keep logos and text as vectors where possible.
- Check photographs at their effective final resolution.
- Confirm contour cutting, lamination and transparent areas.
- Agree bleed and safe margins with the supplier.
- Supply a PDF to specification and retain the editable source.
Why can the colour change?
Colour depends on the printing technology, substrate and profile. Transparent vinyl can look different from a white base. If brand colour is critical, request a proof appropriate to the actual material.
What determines price and lead time?
Surface area, film, cutting complexity, lamination, quantity and installation work all contribute. A single square-metre price cannot represent every type of vinyl accurately.
Frequently asked questions
Can any photograph be printed on vinyl?
The file needs sufficient resolution at final size and the appropriate usage rights.
Which material should be used outdoors?
It depends on exposure, duration, surface and installation method.
Can the printer cut letters or silhouettes?
That depends on the cutting equipment and the design’s minimum feature size.
