An A5 saddle-stitched magazine without a separate cover normally uses the same paper for its outer and inner pages. This straightforward construction works well for newsletters, programmes and shorter publications. Both the format and page count must be suitable for saddle stitching.
To prepare an accurate order, confirm the finished size, materials and binding format.
What does ‘without a separate cover’ mean?
It does not mean that the publication has no front or back cover. It means that the outer pages are part of the same set of folded sheets and do not necessarily use a different paper or a separately produced cover.
What size is an A5 magazine?
The finished A5 size is 148 × 210 mm. When it is produced from folded A4 sheets, the printer must confirm the trim size and production allowances.
How many pages can it have?
With conventional saddle stitching, folded sheets produce page counts in multiples of four. The maximum depends on the paper, total thickness and machinery, so there is no single limit for every print setup.
Which paper should you choose?
The inner and outer pages can use the same paper. Its weight affects the bulk of the magazine and how easily the sheets fold. In thicker publications, the inner pages may shift outwards.
Saddle stitching and page creep
In a magazine made from several folded sheets, the inner pages protrude slightly farther than the outer pages before trimming. Imposition and creep compensation are handled during production.
How to prepare the PDF
- Set the document to the final A5 size.
- Check pagination and reading order.
- Include bleed and a safe inner margin.
- Check fonts and image resolution.
- Supply single pages if requested by the printer.
- Review a finished proof or sample.

Frequently asked questions
Does ‘without a separate cover’ mean there is no cover?
No. The outer pages act as the front and back cover.
Must the page count be a multiple of four?
Usually, with conventional saddle stitching.
Can the cover use a different paper?
Yes, but that would be a different production specification.
