Poster errors are not always visible on screen. A photograph may lack sufficient resolution, a phone number may be wrong, or a background may leave a white strip after trimming. The best way to prevent these problems is to check three areas before submitting the artwork.
These three checks for printing posters apply both to a short run and to a campaign produced in several formats.
The three checks: dimensions and bleed, actual image quality, and a final review of the text and exported PDF.
1. Check the finished size, bleed and margins
First decide whether the poster will be A3, A2, A1, A0 or another size. The trim size is the finished product size. Bleed extends beyond it so that photographs and backgrounds still reach the edge after trimming.
Three millimetres on each side is a common reference, but it is not suitable for every machine and substrate. Confirm the requirements with the printer and keep headings, phone numbers and codes inside a safe margin.
2. Review images, resolution and logos
A raster photograph depends on its original pixels. Enlarging it artificially cannot restore detail that does not exist. Vector logos and text generally retain their clean outlines when resized.
The required resolution also depends on viewing distance. A graphic viewed from several metres away does not have the same requirements as a small photograph examined at close range.
3. Verify the text, dates and final file
Mistakes in phone numbers, addresses, prices and dates may require the entire run to be reprinted. Carry out a separate proofreading and commercial-data check, then export and inspect the PDF because exporting can alter fonts or other elements.
If the campaign has several poster versions, identify every file and its corresponding quantity to prevent confusion.
